Indoor swimming-pool
Nogent-sur-Oise
(France)
This swimming-pool complex was built on the limit between two cities : Nogent-sur-Ooise and Villers-Saint Paul. It was meant to be multipurpose, to comply with technical characteristics. The result reached was such that never expected by the city of Nogent Sur Oise.
The construction of this leisure swimming pool complex is the natural completion of the sports complex situated east of Nogent sur Oise, composed of a football field, a playground, and an archery area.
In this building the light was the main element which was sought. It is physically connected to the sport complex.
The architectural structure is made up of a series of ramps and staircases, which look on to the Avenue de l'Europe and which lead to the entrance of the pool. The grassy and flowering borders make of it a pleasant place. Terraces demonstrate an out bursting of this complex. A vast car-park has been accommodated in order to cope with a very important frequentation.
Within a 3 years’time, more than 1 million of people have enjoyed these leisure and training swimming-pools. This structure is the first one made of wood owing to a prefabricated and triangularly braced device. The end arcades are bearing ones, but the main efforts are distributed over the frontwall structure.
The automatic changing rooms make much easier their simultaneous use and there is only one control point. A cafeteria completes this swimming-pool complex. All the technical equipments are located in the basement.

الزهرة 18-02-2006, 11:54 PM Renovation of Les Tourelles Swimming-Pool
(France)
“The tourelles swimming-pool” (Georges Vallerey Water Stadium - Paris 20e) was built for the 1924 Olympic Games according to a german architectural style, but was never fully achieved, though it has been intensively frequented since its opening, despite its lack of roof and of heating device.
The renovation program included a new Olympic pool endowed with an adaptable geometry, a removable roof with a 35 m. span, several changing-rooms for 1.000 people, a medical center and one shop. Besides, the architect provided it with tiers which enabled to have more than 2.000 spectators sitting and one stand for the Press

Kirchberg
(Luxemburg)
This sports center is located on a thirteen hectares’ site. Its program includes enclosed facilities such as an olympic swimming-pool, a sports hall and corresponding open air athletic grounds. The architectural and structural approaches of the building are strongly integrated into local landscapes : a plateau with an expressway. The architect has conceived a series of prestressed thin concrete vaults which fan out from a central point.
These vaults create rich and diversified architectural volumes and spaces. Natural lighting dispersed within the vaults further animates these interior spaces. The complete interplay between the inside and outside spaces gave to this complex a specific architectural atmosphere complemented by pools, promenades and children playgrounds

The Carnot-Swimming pool in Paris constitutes the first large-scale realizalion of this type, which enabled to cover within a few minutes an open-air swimming-pool, thus offering a swimming-place which can be used whatever the weather.
Other open year-round swimming-pools (open even during severe cold-winter periods), already existed in Moscow and Budapest, but they were heated pools , their access being only possible through a screen, and besides they offered practically no visibility inside them because of the steam.
The Carnot swimming pool was planned to be used by 1,700 people (its capacity can reach 3,000 per day) and is essentially destined to the public at large and to the training of school children. It is composed of three pools : a covered swimming pool (50 m x 15 m), a diving pool and a wading pool. Facing the sunning tiers of the large pool stands a building the ground floor of which is reserved for reception and administrative services, while the basement houses the technical equipments such as the : heating system, water treatment equipment and locker-room facilities.
As for what concerns the design of the mobile roof over the large pool and the beaches nearby, Roger Taillibert resorted to a concept he had just experimented in Cannes : a parasol-type structure unfolding and folding up quickly to protect the Palm Beach's ''théâtre de verdure''. The principle of such a structure consists in a mast stretching a series of cables in the space, on which moves a light velum unfolding and folding-up at will.
The surface to be covered on the Boulevard Carnot spreads over 2,000 square meters. The 27-meter-high mast was placed on the terrace of the reception building, so as to free the pool and the poolside areas of a major obstruction. The mast made of steel pipes is anchored into the ground and maintained owing to three cables.

(France)
The program of this complex which constituted the subject of Roger Taillibert’s architecture diploma, consisted in several swimming-pools, one of them of olympic size,a thallasotherapy center and their related equipment, a total of 3,800 square meters to be covered. The structure is composed of surbased vaults, to meet the heigth servitude (eight meters maximum).
Seven shell-elements constitute these vaults placed side. They take hold on two abutment piers on the ground 45.60 meters apart and are joined by prestressed concrete stays passing underneath the pools. The shells terminate on the ground and serve as rain-water reservoirs. They present a sculptural effect.
The shape of these shells is achieved with two sections of elliptical cylinder at 25° of the horizon. They are divided at the top by another elliptical cylinder with an horizontal axis, forming long lines of zenith of lighting. These shells are 38 meters long with a section of three meters.
The implementation of these shells involved extremely complex formwork on account of the different longitudinal and transversal thicknesses. Thirty-two kilometers of piping were required and the stress limits were calculated by a computer that digested a matrix of 114 linear equation with 114 unknown each. Furthermore, 2,300 steel ropes, 12 mm. in diameter, distributed in the vault formworks, were incorporated before the concrete was poured to ensure its prestress. The heating plant chimney was installed in the shaft of the exterior diving-board, so as not to spoil the sculptural lines of the vault
