Introduction To Fiber Optic Technology
1- It is know to all Telecom Engineers that early communication systems ,signal was transferred to electrical signal such as (Tel. and Telegraph) sent on metallic cables such as copper cables.
Graham Bell perfected the use of electricity and metallic copper wires to transmit (Audio signals)
He was also interested in to communicate with light in 1880
2- In 1930 (Lucent Technologies) used a method of (Guiding) use fiber optics through pipes to transfer signals, in 1950 it used fiber optic cables to guide light signals .
Fiber material not allow light signal to escape , fiber optic cable (F.O.C) composed of two layers inner (core) and outer (cladding) and the light will be guided between the two layers , it is obvious that Original Audio sign should be transferred to optical signal (Modulated optical signal using light source).
3-First commercial application of (F.O.C) since 1979 , however it was not used until 1982 , the construction of (F.O.C) subscriber loop. First generated system operate at 280(M.B PS)
4-Today research continues in the field of (F.O.C) applications , manufacturing process up till now accelerate speed rate to 2.5( G.BPS)
Benefits and Advantages of ( F.O.C) Than Copper
1- Increases carrying capacity , traditional copper pairs (Twisted Pairs) and coaxial cables can carry slightly light bit rate (only for short distances)for high attention laser , So major advantage of (F.O.C) is to carry large amount of information at high bit rates over long distances (For very low attenuation of signal (Round o.5d.b/Km) , that means that (F.O.C) can carry light bandwidth with low dispersion which will be explained latter in details.
2- Low attenuation for light signals which modulate original Audio and Video signals.
Low dispersion (means spreading out of light is V low) , So pulses of light proceeding without weakness .
3-No electromagnetic interference ( V low noise , no x-talk ) between signals
4-Easy for extension ,increase capacity and No. of subscribers on same (F.O.C) ring.
5-Smaller size and light weight on long term planning cost/customer is V low and one PVC duct can accommodate 4 (F.O.C) in small 4 sub duct , each (F.O.C) contains up to 96 fibers .
