السلام عليكم:
Turbo Direct Injection
Two current versions: VE & PD
VE uses a single plunger design that rotates and pumps fuel at high pressure (16,000-19,000 psi) into one of four fuel lines which direct fuel to the connected fuel injector. The injectors are designed to break the high pressure pulse into two injection events which softens the pressure rise and reduces combustion noise. The VE systems is completely computer controlled however is shares a lot of commonality with older generation diesels in terms allowing the computer to control systems previoulsy regulated through mechanical means.
PD or Pumpe Duese is somewhat simplified in respect to having each cylinder have it's own dedicated injection pump integrated into the injector body. This allows higher fuel pressures (30,000 psi and higher in the near future) to be created. The PD system has similar limitations to the VE systems in that they can only pump fuel when the Unit Injectors plunger is being compressed by the cylinders 3rd cam lobe. This means the PD engine cannot inject fuel at odd times to aid in catalytic converter burn-off cycles without adding additional complexity to the sytems. VW tried this in the past with the early generation VE powere 1Z passats, it led to mass recalls and smoking issues.
Common rail Direct Injection
We can simplify this even further, except for fuel pressures and the speed of the system it's identical to any other gasoline multi point injection sytem in terms of system function. When you compare the other aspects of the CDI system it's very impressive. Fuel pressures are currently in the 24,000 psi range soon to be increased to over 37,000 psi thanks to advances in pressure boosting in the injectors. The CDI also allows fuel to be injected at anytime the ECU decides thus allowing wider control of combustion. Add in the fast cycling Piezo injectors and you have the ability to spray fuel at the rate of 10 injections for every power stroke of the cylinder. CDI simplifies the system by not relying on very demanding oiil specifications and reduces the loads imposed on the cam and motor by using variable displacement fuel pumps. These pumps provide just enough fuel to keep the rail another way of saying "Hydraulic Accumlator" at the specified 23,500 psi.
I like any of the diesel systems if for no other reason they all provide great power as well as reliable operation when maintained per the manufacturers specifications
